Explaining Social Media To Your Chamber of Commerce

by Joe on January 28, 2009

Local businesses bond and support one another through organizations like their Chamber of Commerce…but are they missing out on a huge opportunity?

Check out Chris Brogan’s Steal This Small Business Promotion Idea for a glimpse of what I mean.

chamber-of-commerceJust to be clear, communicating online is a way to further your real world business activities, not act as a substitute for them.

Chambers of commerce and small business owners who grasp this need an evangelist.

They need you to help explain in simple terms how social media will make a significant positive impact on their business.

Chamber of Commerce ‘Social Media Checklist’

1. Social Media promotes deeper engagement with your customers.

2. Deeper Engagement means creating a conversation with customers – making them realize they have ‘skin in the game’ when it comes to doing business with you instead of competitors.

3. Don’t Spam! Think about your customers, friends, and colleagues wants when crafting a message to promote.

4. Video is Effective. If you can teach chamber of commerce members to create online video, you’ll become indispensable.

5. Being Indispensable is Necessary. When you’re indispensable, price isn’t an issue. People take your calls. Opportunities appear out of nowhere.

Teach your chamber of commerce how to use social media to become indispensable. You may invent a career out of it.

Our Chamber is working hard on this. We are using Twitter, Linked In, Ning, and blogging. It is an idea whos time has come.

I blogged about the need for people to get going before the space becomes so busy that it is hard to stand out.
