One Small Voice Regarding the Gannett Furlough

Gannett Furlough The Best Alternative

gannettI was surprised to receive an email about the Gannett furlough.

I couldn’t even remember what a furlough was.

Gannett employees are required to take an unpaid week off to help the company retain a strong balance sheet.

I’m not excited about a week without pay, but I’m grateful that it was chosen over the alternative – layoffs.

In a way it makes me feel like the company is pulling together, and I am reminded of the many people in our country who are suffering through hard times.

When I told my father-in-law about my day, he looked me in the eye and said, “Joe, I’ve lived through some very tough times, and the country is going to get through it.”

This is the scariest economy I’ve ever lived through, and I don’t know what will happen before things get better. Maybe it’s just old fashioned American idealism, but I’m confident we’re going to make it through this downturn in good shape.

Whenever I get worried about the economy I call my dad for advice. Today he asked me if I was doing my best. “Yes,” I told him. “Good,” Dad said, “then keep working hard and you’ll be ok.”

I’ll keep working hard Dad, I promise.
