Think Outside of Your Single Website
iVillage was the Number 1 women’s website in the US for several years. Glam took over that title in less than a year and a half by changing the way websites appeal to readers.
iVillage has a different way of distributing content than Glam. iVillage uses their own content to inspire chat forums. Glam expanded their readership by opening up their website, or ‘distribution channel’, to a large network of bloggers.
Glam brought everyone inside the tent the way a master networker brings together people with common interests.
Single Websites vs. Blogging Networks
I read about Glam vs. iVillage on the Jeff Jarvis blog ‘Buzz Machine’. The pink circle, Glam, is full of tiny purple circles. These represent the numerous ways people search the site (deep, varied content).
In contrast, most of iVillage is concentrated into a few large circles. The darkness inside each circle represents viewers coming in to the site to view one story and then leaving.
What I learned from reading the Jarvis article is how many verticals aren’t using the Glam example yet.
There still isn’t a perfected model to deliver online content or advertising, and there’s some hard core opportunity for everyone that can move us in a more efficient direction.
